Panel is part of the seminar promoted by Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce (BCCC) on October 4th
TORONTO, October 3rd, 2018 – Gender equality has a real economic value and is a part of the Canadian progressive agenda towards a Canada-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a trading bloc that has Brazil as it broader economy. Enhancing the global trade through women’s economic empowerment is one of the panels in the 12th edition of Doing Business in Brazil Seminar, this Thursday, October 4th. The traditional event in Toronto is promoted by the Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce (BCCC).
The event will have the presence of several guest speakers, such as the Honorable Minister of International Trade Diversification, Jim Carr and Ms. Almas Jiwani, President of Emeritus UN Canada National Committee and CEO of Almas Jiwani Foundation. Ms Jiwani is a fiercely vocal champion for gender equality. She is internationally renowned for her efforts to encourage women’s social, economic, and political empowerment, and spearheads initiatives where corporate growth intersects with humanitarian development.

After Mr. Jiwani keynote speech, the BCCC will present the panel Are we inclusive of women in business? – moderated by Jamile Cruz, founder and Executive Director at I&D 101, with panelists Nathalie Dust, board member at BPW-Montreal, Paola Saad, president of the BCCC, and Peter Hawkins, vice-president of BCCC.
In 2019, the World Trade Organization (WTO) will report progress towards implementation of a joint declaration made by its members and observers on December 2017, in Argentina, acknowledging the importance of incorporating a gender perspective into the promotion of inclusive economic growth. Different statistics point the economic benefits of women’s participation in the labor market. A 2017’s International Monetary Fund (IMF) research, for example, indicates that the world GDP could rise 5% by enhancing women’s participation in the labor market.
Besides the women’s economic empowerment and the Canada-Mercosur FTA, the Doing Business in Brazil 2018 will discuss the aftermath Brazilian elections, the Canadian Perspective on trade and investments in Brazil, and strategies & practical steps to enter the Brazilian market.
