BCCC ESG Excellence Series - ESG Performance: Making it Happen
The Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce our next BCCC ESG Excellence Series - ESG Performance: Making it Happen – featuring Motoko Aizawa, Principal Author of the 2006 IFC Performance Standards and President of Sustainable Observatory for Infrastructure, which will take place online on Wednesday, September 22nd from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM EST / 11:00 AM to 12 PM BRA.
The vital challenge for ESG is to make use of frameworks, references, and metrics as an effective tool for improved performance and real impact. In other words, how to really make it happen? In this context, the IFC Performance Standards have been a pilar for several ESG frameworks, best practices, and emerging legislation. How have they been developed and consolidated? How do they correlate with ESG today? What are the challenges to move beyond transparency efforts and really impact performance?
To further this discussion, we invited Motoko Aizawa, one of the protagonists in developing the IFC Performance Standards and a global authority in the Environmental, Social and Governance Dimensions of Sustainability. She is the principal author of the 2006 IFC Performance Standards and the human rights provisions in the 2012 version of these Standards. Until recently, Motoko led efforts by the World Bank to update its Environmental and Social Safeguard Policies and was Managing Director USA of the Institute for Human Rights and Business. She is currently the Chair of DC’s Commission on Human Rights and President of the Observatory for Sustainable Infrastructure.
This exclusive session will be moderated by Rafael Benke, CEO at Proactiva Results and Chair of the BCCC ESG Committee, with welcoming remarks by the Committee’s Vice-Chairs, Iman Kara, Portfolio Manager at Brookfield Asset Management and Luciano Souza, Partner at Cescon Barrieu.

Motoko Aizawa is President of the Observatory for Sustainable Infrastructure, a research organization that aims to bridge the sustainability gap of mega-infrastructure development, investment and finance through data collection and policy research. Ms. Aizawa spent more than two decades at the World Bank Group in various capacities, including as Sustainability Advisor to the World Bank’s Sustainable Development Network. She is the principal author of the original IFC Performance Standards; she also led the creation and implementation of the Equator Principles. In both cases, she helped these standards incorporate the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Ms. Aizawa began her career as a business lawyer, specializing in due diligence in mergers and acquisitions at Baker & McKenzie, and project financing of infrastructure projects at IFC’s Legal Department. After she left the World Bank, she served as Managing Director USA of the Institute for Human Rights in Business between 2014 and 2016. She currently serves as the Chair of the District of Columbia’s Commission on Human Rights.
