2nd annual Canada-Brazil Language, Education, and Workforce Forum
Dear Canadian Colleagues and Friends,
It is with pleasure that I invite Canadian university, college, language school and private sector leaders to join me in Sao Paulo this coming March 20-22, 2016 for the 2nd Canada Brazil Language, Education and Workforce Forum.
This milestone event convenes innovative leaders in international education, language education experts, senior policy makers and industry leaders to discuss the internationalization needs of Brazil and Canada’s higher education system and labour force, and identify common solutions to support our mutual internationalization objectives.
This dialogue comes at a critical juncture in the Canada-Brazil relationship. In 2014 nearly 21,000 Brazilians chose Canada as a language learning destination, and Canadian educators are now involved in projects in Brazil to deliver quality Canadian programs. For the last four years, Canada has enjoyed the benefits of a substancial increase in Brazilian student mobility through Science without Borders program – a government of Brazil program that has allowed Canadian campuses, businesses and communities to welcome over 8,000 Brazilian students for academic study, language education, research and industry internships. The SwB program has served as a catalyst for expanded Canada-Brazil educational, cultural, political and commercial relationships across the board.
Indeed, the current fiscal situation in Brasilia presents some challenges for Brazilian political decision makers, and raises some questions of the stability of funding for mobility programs such as SwB. However, Brazil remains committed to investing in education and research, and is well on its way to internationalizing in numerous sectors of strategic importance to Canada. Now more than ever, Canada has an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment as a long term partner to Brazil, building on the momentum generated by the SwB program, burgeoning institutional partnerships in education and research, a rapidly growing Canadian alumni network in Brazil, and the fact that Canada is still hands-down the number one overseas destination for Brazilian ESL students.
In addition to helping to shape a strategy for future Canada-Brazil education and internationalization cooperation, the March 2016 Forum will serve as a valuable opportunity for networking and partnership-building between academic institutions and with private sector and government stakeholders. I encourage Canadians to take advantage of this event to grow your network in Brazil and identify promising new partnerships for mobility, exchange and cross-sectoral collaboration in research and innovation.
I look forward to welcoming you to Sao Paulo!
Sincerely,
Stephane Larue
