Brazil-Canada Talks: The Future of Healthcare

The world is in the middle of a pandemic and global economic crisis that is challenging all aspects of life as we know it. Social distance, online learning, work from home – most individuals have lost their sense of normal, and if there is one thing we know for sure is that everyone will have to adapt to a new normal when this is eventually over.

The COVID-19 crisis is forcing most industries to disrupt and is catalyzing and accelerating the long anticipated “digital transformation” – especially the transformation of healthcare.

Telemedicine and digital health have been around for a while but COVID-19 made the healthcare industry and its regulators rapidly realize that its applications need to be adopted in a much larger scale. Hospitals and the healthcare system worldwide will need an upgrade in every level, from their infrastructure to their processes, as they need to ensure a better and safer environment for medical staff and patients.

The mindset is changing, as well as the modern tools and technologies that come with it - artificial intelligence, digital health apps, cloud EMR, faster diagnoses and genome sequencing, robots to treat patients – and the list goes on and on. Although certain legal and regulatory challenges remain, this outbreak might be the right incentive for lawmakers and regulatory agencies to promulgate further measures that facilitate more widespread adoption of telemedicine.
